The Purpose of Blogging
The other day, I was thinking about blogging. Specifically, why I blog.
Wait.
Why DO I blog?
Hmm. Let's start at the beginning of my blogging journey.
When I started this blog, it was to follow my adventures of being a college student. Man, if only I had signed up to be one of Seventeen's freshman fifteen bloggers when I had the chance! Aw well. Starting the blog, I had a few main goals: 1. Get a Degree 2. Not Gain the Dreaded Freshmen Fifteen 3. Study Abroad 4. Stay out of Debt 5. Get Good Grades 6. Make Friends. The last goal was to blog everyday.
Originally I think I had thoughts of: "Maybe this will get me somewhere. Maybe I'll get a lot of readers. Maybe this will be something I could show to show my writing skills."
But then I didn't get many readers. It didn't help me get to anything bigger. Plus, as I mentioned before, I wouldn't dare show this blog to anyone for a job.
At the same time, the blog was supposed to be a place to throw my thoughts out. Blogs tend to be kind of like online journals. A fine and dandy idea at first, but then... the thoughts felt forced. Like I had to write them. For who? My mom, sister, and a few other people who have a million other blog possibilities?
Soon I told myself that I didn't need to blog everyday. Why write dribble if it's not worth any one's time (including my own)? At least that's what I told myself. Yet, I still felt obligated to write everyday.
Why is that? Why do I feel like it's somehow my JOB to write about what I'm thinking about every day? Is it because of consistency? Or maybe it's because there are so many other bloggers that write everyday. That gave me a funny thought though: Y'see, some of my favorite bloggers don't write everyday. (Don't get me wrong, I like plenty of bloggers that do) For the bloggers that don't write everyday, I get so excited when I see one of their posts in my blogroll. It's like a treat! Now, I'm not sure if my blog would ever be like that, but my point is that interesting blogging doesn't have to be an everyday thing. Especially if you have nothing to say everyday.
I had one last reason to blog, and that's for fun. However, that brings me back to the commitment side of it. After awhile, blogging sometimes isn't fun. Just forced.
I know that I'll probably stop blogging here when I'm done with college. It's not a for sure thing, but I'm pretty sure I'll stop. For now, I'll keep blogging until I reach my college goals. Doesn't mean I'll blog everyday though. If I have nothing to write, I simply won't write. Even if I have to force myself not to. (Sounds weird, but true.)
Perhaps a new chapter in my blogging ventures has occurred? Well, we'll see.
Other than that, my registration for classes was today. Registering for classes sucks. I have a really weird schedule, and I'm not sure how it's going to work with my college plans. Crap. I'm hoping things will get fixed up.
Why do you blog?

Life as a Duck: Fashion
I've been trying to figure out a type of "Life at U of O" type of thing, but I'm not really sure what to call it. I don't think I'll do it on Saturdays either, but this is just an experiment. Let's start this one off by talking about Fashion!
Like any college campus, I've seen plenty of the sweatpants and shirt combo. However, at the same time I've been seeing a lot of fantastic clothes and fashion while over here. Here's just a sampling of styles that I've seen quite a bit of.
TOMS. Oh goodness. TOMS are everywhere around here, in every color you can think of. (Actually, mainly red for some reason.) TOMS are a neat shoe, but they're not the coolest thing around. Truth be told, they're kind of the new Ugg. As in, everyone has a pair.
Scarves. Scarves are a great accessory, and they can add a lot to an outfit. I need to work on this one, because I'm usually wearing a scarf just for cold. However, scarves are great and very popular around here.
Fitted jeans with a nice shirt. This is a look that I never really go for, but is very big over here. Honestly, it's a nice look. Simple, but put together.
Bold colored small purses. I have been seeing a lot of really cute small purses, and in every color. It's making me really want a cool, cute little bag for myself!
I know that there are a lot of other great looks from around campus, but for now I have to sign off. I'll work on this more later I suppose.
What type of styles are you digging?

Getting Into the Swing of Things
Indeed, I've had of list of things to do for the week that seems to be growing but at the same time, is finally starting to feel like things are getting marked off. For instance, I was able to get a chance tonight to put things up on the wall. They've been sitting on my desk in a pile mocking me for the past week, so it was nice to clear off some space. Funny thing is, I've been doing little things all week to get my area all organized. It just feels like it's pretty much there. Here's a peek, and please ignore the fact that I'm still decorating like a preteen. I just need things on the wall.
Yes that is a Harry Potter poster. And shut up, don't judge.
In other news, I have been keeping myself busy not just with organizing the room. Yesterday I wandered over to the rec center to try out a fitness class with my sister. Y'know, now that I'm here it's kind of nice to have a sibling at the same school. She knows how things work, and at least I have a bit of a connection.
Speaking of connections... My loserness is coming out like crazy it seems. It's just so hard getting to know people at a completely new school, especially since I don't have the dorm connection with anyone or anything. It's a bit troublesome. But I am trying. I'm trying to find out information about clubs, all of that jazz. That brings us to something I stopped by to check out today called the Alpha Phi Omegas. They're a co-ed fraternity thing that does a lot of volunteer work. It sounds interesting, but at the same time I don't think I'm that good of a person. I'm not the type who usually goes out to volunteer, but who knows? I'm also going to check out some other things, such as an information meeting tomorrow about running club.
So there's still a lot that I'm still trying to figure out. Starting out at a new school, along with a wave of hormonal emotions (you know what I mean), it's just been a little scary. Having my printer jam at 10pm last night didn't help the nerves either.
As for tomorrow, I have one class that starts at noon. Nice. However, I have to run and get a decently sized assignment done for Friday tomorrow as well. Perhaps I'll have time to finally organize the living room? We'll see.
What types of groups did you join in college?

Acting Your Own Age
What happens when you turn twenty? Since you're no longer a teenager, are you officially an adult? I don't really know.
I've been thinking about my age a lot lately, and it's not because of the fact stated above. It's because of 1. When I see other college kids and 2. The amount of help I get from my parents.
Let's start off with the college kids thing. Even though I guess I'm a full-blown college kid now, I just don't feel like I am. To me, the other college people look like they're so much older than me. That's what I think in my head, but I've been assured that I look college aged. However on the other side of the spectrum, I feel older in personality. I don't like a lot of the trends that people my age like. I don't text often, and I hardly care about Facebook. I feel like I don't fit in with my age group. I want to, I just... don't. I have a cousin who fits perfectly into the age group, but I don't want to be like that. I dunno.
The other part of thinking about my age comes from help from my parents. Mostly my mom. I think that I get way too much help from my parents. Sometimes I ask for it, but a lot of the time it seems like my mom just can't stop. I want her to, but at the same time I'm scared to have that happen. There are things that I need to be responsible for, and sometimes it feels like I don't get the chance to be responsible. It also could be that I don't know how to accept help, and I should grow into that. Hell, I don't know. I am still a teenager (for now).
So, that's just me for now in a nutshell. Needs to become more independent, too afraid to do it. Feh.
What age do you feel like you are?

Prepping for School
The difference between how packed and ready I am this year as compared to last year is wild. I remember that I started packing up for college as soon as that graduation cap flew off my head last year, and was all done by the end of the month. This year, I've hardly got anything done. I packed a few things earlier, but the majority of my packing just started this evening. Preparation at its finest, eh?
It's weird because it feels like it should be a new start since it's a new school, but... at the same time, it's like I've already done this before. There are just a few tweaks. Like a much bigger school. Plus not in a dorm. Plus I won't know anyone. Honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about the whole situation.
Other than that, my room looks like my closet threw up everywhere. (classy) That's what happens when you're in the process of organization. Still, I feel gross being in a gross room. Ah well.
Did your college prep change each year? How did it change?

Unwelcome to the Week of Welcome
Most colleges that I've heard of have a Week of Welcome, where activities for new students happen. These events are created for freshmen and transfers, but honestly they're mostly for freshmen. Which is why I'm not participating in the activities during said week.
Another part of the thing that makes me not want to go has to do with Facebook. Apparently, a lot of the people in the grade below me decided to attend this school, and I keep seeing statuses like this:
"Ohmigosh, Week of Welcome is gonna be SO COOL."
"I know! We'll make it awesome, and we'll hang out even though we never hung out in high school! Woo!"
I don't really want to hang out with the high school class below me. It would just be awkward.
Still, the hanging out with all of the younger high schoolers isn't the only factor of me not going. I also know how these things work, and they're not that amazing.
During my New Student Week at Western, I was happily screamed at by PLUS team members. I met people in a rush during "meeting games", and instantly forgot their names because there was no time to think. I listened to a lot of weird speeches, many with points about being raped as a child and overcoming it. More than I needed to hear. Also, what did they have to do with college? Nothing. It was just strange.
I don't need to go to sessions on being in college, I went to those last year. Despite some weird things, it was alright my freshman year. I just don't need it this year.
Did you participate in a Week of Welcome for your school? What was it like?

Seeing the Changes All Around
My room mate is gone. No, she didn't take the mattress, but it is making a nice mat for the ground in case I'm too lazy to actually jump onto my bed to lounge. I forgot how echo-y the room would be without being filled with school supplies and things from home.
Apart from studying most of the day, I went off to enjoy lunch with a few friends and acquaintances. One member of the gang was going to leave right after the lunch, and since she's transferring as well she's pretty much gone for good.
The fact that everything is coming to an end is finally starting to hit me. People are packing up, more and more people to say goodbye to everyday... Crazy.
With this, I feel like the starting gun for the race went off ten minutes ago and I'm still lacing up my shoes. Sure, I have a lot of things packed. I'll be done with finals soon. Still, I'm getting the feeling that I'm being left behind in the dust.
College hasn't felt like college. College has felt like I've been at camp. Is that how it's supposed to feel? Maybe I'll feel different next year. No RAs going through the halls for checks, no "camp" based activities... Who knows?
I've got to get to bed. Eight A.M. final tomorrow... Woo!
When do you finally start to feel the affects of a change?

Comparing Dorms to Home, Spring Days and its Downsides (But Not Really)
I think the internet on my computer didn't want to turn on so I wouldn't watch a show while getting ready for bed. I suppose it's for the best. Therefore, we have a phone-based post for the evening.
The mess in my room? It's getting ridiculous. The thing is, I don't understand why. Almost every day I clean, yet it gets messy an hour later. At first I blamed it on my lack of ability to clean. Now I blame it on lack of space.
I think that's one of the things you take for granted when (if) you're living in a house with your parents before college. That shampoo? Can't go in the bathroom, it's a community bathroom. Those books? If they don't fit on the shelf, there's no where else to put them.
Spring has come (for sure, I think this time). It's a nice feeling, yet it's almost toxic for being a student. The lovely weather makes you want to sit outside, relax, and hang out with friends. Oh, you can try to do homework, but it's not going to get done. Did my day contain doing just that? You bet it did. Yes, I ended up getting my homework done, but there are a lot of other things that I should be getting done as well. Like getting more shaving cream. ... I can use soap for one more day.
The other thing that warm weather does? Seeing as it stays brighter for longer, you tend to think you have more time in the day... which means you have plenty of time... not really.
Still, I can't complain about it. I'm just lucky to have it!
What's the biggest thing you realized you took for granted before college?

Running Late, Feeling Off About School and Other Things
I have had 8:00 am classes almost every day since the beginning of the school year. Today, I woke up for the first time late. Yeah. I managed to get to class only a minute or two late, but it still was late. And of course it was one of those classes where participation counts as attendance. Of course. Just did not put my head in a good place for the rest of the day, you know?
I'm not sure how I've been feeling about my school lately. Yes, I do happen to mention that quite a bit, but my distaste for this school is growing and growing. The thing is, it's not the classes that are bothering me. The area is beginning to bore me. I don't connect with people here. There's no excitement! I suppose that could be said for everywhere, and everywhere is going to become boring after awhile. But this town literally is boring. As for the people, I feel like I don't have things in common with anyone here. Others go to bible studies, it's not what I'm interested in. The only other issue with this school happens to be my major, which I don't think any of the field here are really what I'm interested in. Plus, that's a bit bigger than social life.
On a strange positive note, lately I've been feeling really pretty. Despite feeling the lack of people wishing to be social, I've been feeling like I look pretty. Even in blah clothing. This is kind of big for me, because I feel like my face looks weird a lot. Yes, my mom says I'm pretty, but sometimes it doesn't do it for ya. But yeah. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure I'm not at my skinniest I've been, but I feel prettier. That's kind of a nice feeling.
I think my room mate just likes to push my buttons. She posted a clipping from the front of The Oregonian with a picture with the heading Aw, Burned. She does realize I like the ducks, right? Yes, I know she's probably a beaver, but c'mon. It's your state. Then again, she's also got a giant poster of this hanging on the wall:
![]() |
Yes, this is lil Wayne. He stares at me in my bed. Do not appreciate.
I apologize for the seriously long and negitive post! I try to stay positive, but today I just wasn't in that mode. I'll try to be happier tomorrow! Like I said, a long off-kilter day.
What was the last time you were late?

Going Home (not exactly)
Today was a nice day weather wise. Woke up kind of late and went to the tailgater with Danyon. It was very uneventful. We went to the game... it was not a good game. Pretty sure we lost. Danyon, Sabrina, Katelyn and I tried to go to Yang's, but they're CLOSED on Saturdays and Sundays. What crap is that?
I drove up to Canby today for my cousin's birthday. I suppose that it's my going back home for the weekend, but not really. I'm staying the night here tonight. My room mate hasn't stayed in our dorms yet, I wonder if she'll sleep there tonight now that I'm not there?
As far as avoiding the freshmen fifteen, I did not do well on it today. Whenever I go over to my aunt's house, they have a ton of junk food. Thankfully, I'm not over here all of the time. (It's fun over here though!)

The First Official College Post
All of my things, before moved into the car
The van, stuffed with college things
- 1. You can't unpack all in one day.
You know how I said I wanted to get away from the people of my old school, meet new people? My roomate is from my hometown. The party was held by the older sister of another girl from my school. All I can say is that it wasn't for me. I wanted to go. I wanted to stay in my dorm my very first night of college. I don't care if I get a million days here, I just have something about sentimental dates and such. That's when I did something stupid. I walked home. I know, it's one of the dumbest things you can do. All alone at night where you don't know where you are, and it's raining. It was like a bad movie. This made me realize I need to try to shift away from doing things with my roomie all of the time. Do things my own way right? I ended up even hanging out with some hallmate in the common area for awhile too.
There's so many things to say, but so little space to say it! This week is beginning to feel like that too. I learned about media at WOU, met a friend from another hall, heard a few speakers including the real life hitch, went to a dance, then got to this point. ...That really doesn't explain much, does it? I dislike having to compress everything into blurbs, but this is what happens when you have two days of running around like mad with lack of sleep.
I will work on my blogging skills. Perhaps I need to keep notes of my days? Does anyone keep notes of their days for their blogs? I just need to remember to take pictures. It's so hard to remember!
Tomorrow's post will be more blog-y! I'm still learning. (Also, I'm going to delete that last post.)

Starting something new in more ways than one
That right there was a sad attempt at an introduction for my blog here. Hey, my name is Hannah and this is my newly created blog. A little information that you'll need to know about me is:
- I am an Oregonian girl who has gone to school with the same people for thirteen years.
- I am about to start my first year of college at Western Oregon University.
- I'm ready for something new.
There are a few things that I hope to accomplish while in college. These things are:
- Get a degree (That's kind of a duh one, but it had to be said.)
- Not gain the dreaded Freshman Fifteen.
- Travel abroad during my Junior year of college
- Stay out of debt
- Keep my grades up
- Make friends
- Post a blog entry everyday
1.Get a degree
This may seem pretty obvious since I am going to college, but I personally think it goes a bit deeper than that. Many people go to college and never finish. Right now, I'm not even sure what my major will be. At the moment I'm planning to have a double major in English and Spanish but I don't know for sure.
2. Not gain the dreaded Freshman Fifteen
People worry about weight all the time in our world today. Whether it's someone being aneorexic or growing obesity rates, we are always thinking about the size someone is. I've seen the rollercoaster of emotion from a scale going up and down, but not necessarily for me. I've seen how stressful changing sizes can be which is why I want to try to maintain my weight. I will try to make good choices and eat right. I also don't believe the freshmen fifteen is gained solely in the freshmen year. I think that it can happen at anytime, so this is more of a life rule: Try to maintain myself through good eating and excersize.
3. Travel abroad during my Junior year of college
I really hope I can do this, but I know I have to do some things to try and get there. I need to make sure to keep my grades up and save money. Sounds easy on paper, but life is funny. I would like to travel to Great Britain or Madrid. (I'm leaning more towards the U.K.)
4. Stay out of debt
Again, sounds nice on paper. Alas, I don't know what will happen even in one month. The best way to go about it is to spend wisely and budget as well as I possibly can.
5. Keep my grades up
I'm going to college only for an education, right? HA! It's not just about the classes and lectures, it's about a new step in your life. In high school my grades were average, and I've realized that I need to focus. This doesn't mean I plan on being a shut in who only studies though. Which brings us to...
6. Make friends
I've gone to school with the same people from K through 12. My friends are dear to me, but as we've all gotten older I've discovered that we have begun to drift apart. I have very different interests then my friends, and that's all I really have to say about it right now. I want to see what kinds of people are out in the "real" world.
7. Post a blog entry everyday
I'm going to start up this little habit on my unofficial first day of college, this Sunday. This is something I WANT to happen, but I don't know how that will work. For instance, what if I don't have internet? I can try for now. Even if it's a little post, it'll be something. I won't make the rest of my posts as long as this one either.
These are things that I hope my blog will help me follow. It's scary trying something new, but it's always better to try then spend your whole life wondering "What if?"
The last thing that I would like to mention in this daunting blog post is the name of this blog. For about a week, I was trying to think of a clever name. This is not an easy task for me. I am terrible at thinking of names. I tested out different song titles that I thought sounded witty that apparently others thought were witty as well, seeing as they were unavaliable. Finally this evening the perfect name clicked in my brain. I Read It In A Book Somewhere. This is basically my way of life. I am always trying to give wise information that I read in magazine articles, books, whatever I find. "I read in a magazine that you should eat near a window in the morning so your body reacts to the natural light of day" or "In my 'How to study for college book' it says you should spend 40 hours as a student". See what I mean? It may sound silly to you, but it feels kind of special to me.
I hope that all of you who happen to read my blog enjoy it. Don't worry, this is going to be my longest post! (I think.) Now it's time for me to go to bed, even though they say you shouldn't go to bed right after using the computer. (See what I mean?) I'll see you all on Sunday!
