I just have to say that this weekend was a great weekend. I spent times with friends, family, and doing things that made me feel good.
Now, the upcoming week is finals week. Yep. You know what though? I'm not terrified. I'm not extremely stressed, or lacking sleep, or spending hours hidden away in the library.
This term hasn't been very hard, and weirdly enough I feel guilty. Yes, guilty. Or maybe the right word is embarrassed.
When I hear everyone else talk about how hard they have to work, I feel bad. I don't have to write papers that have page limits in the double digits. I don't have finals that take studying time to the max. My classes are simple.
I think why it makes me feel guilty is because it feels like I'm being lazy in college. Being lazy in college isn't good. You go to college to prove that you've learned a lot and are an educated citizen.
However, I think of why I'm not going crazy with stress right now compared to a lot of people and it makes sense. Most people I talk to are upper class men. I apparently have a habit of getting to know the upperclassmen, especially since I know a lot of my sister's friends. Most of them are graduating this year, so obviously they have upper division courses. Upper division courses= more difficulty.
I'm taking lower division courses right now because I have to. Necessary credits. I know I'll have harder work in the future.
For example, all journalism students have to go through a sequence called Gateway. I'm doing it winter term, and I know it's going to be a lot of work. I don't even know all of the details of the series, but it involves a huge project that takes up a lot of time. I've seen the mention of Gateway make some students cringe.
The point is, I know I'll have a lot to work in the future. Sure I have easy classes now, but that will change. I need to make sure that the classes I take now I get as high of grades as I can. I think it would be nice to try for an honor of some kind in college, and these classes right now will help.
Sure I've had a few stresses with this term, but looking back they've been minor. I tend to over think things. Like over thinking the ease of this term? Perhaps. Eh. That's how I roll.
That isn't to say I shouldn't study for my finals, because I definitely need to study for ECON.
Do you ever feel guilty for weird things (Like having it easier in school)? Did your college major have a big project required?

Let's Calm Down
I have a confession.
I seem to have a 40 year old brain trapped in a 20 year old body. No I'm not talking about intelligence, I'm talking about neurosis. I'm extremely neurotic, and constantly stressing out about things that frankly, shouldn't worry me as much as they do. I don't know why I'm so neurotic, because no one else in my family is. I do though.
The last few days all of my stressors have been affecting the others, building up inside. School, finances, social life, healthy habits... Unfortunately, everything has been feeling like I'm bombing it, causing a collapse. It always feels like as soon as I make one goal, five things pop up against that goal. Like the money thing.
I pretty much just broke down in front of my mom earlier this evening, and she basically replied with this:
"For crying out loud, you're twenty years old. Live in the moment!"
That got me thinking: I seriously don't act like a twenty year old. I constantly am looking to get eight hours of sleep. I monitor my diet, trying to get my fruits and veggies in. I hoard money like it's going out of style. It's a bit ridiculous.
Now, there's nothing wrong with being responsible. I'm just over-thinking everything. Per usual.
Time to calm the freak down.
Speaking of things popping up to block my goals, my cousin and aunt have decided that I should have a Pinterest today. That's... not good for someone trying to spend LESS time on the computer. Goodness.
Are you a worrywart? Or do you go with the flow?

Cold is The Word and Slipping Up on Goals
If there was a word for the day, today's word would be cold. I was seriously freezing all day long! Alright, it wasn't that cold today. I simply get cold very easily.
Oregon is a tricky devil when it comes to sunny days. You'll look out the window and think, "Golly! What a gorgeous sunny day! It must be so nice and warm out there." This is never the case. There have been many times where I'll look outside, get excited about the sun then check the temperature to see that it's 34 degrees out there. Not the warm I was looking for. Then there are the other times where it's 52 degrees and pouring, but who wants to go out then?
Whenever I think about places to live, I always imagine living somewhere that's warm all of the time. I wouldn't want to live on the beach though. Sand gets into everything, so I'd never want to get anything done! My mentality seems to be if it gets sandy=it gets messy. Messy is not a good environment to work in, at least in my case. Anyway, the point is I'd like to live in a warm climate that's not a beach.
What about the seasons, you ask? That is one thing that I do love about living in the state I live in. I adore seeing the beautiful golden leaves in the fall. I love the blossoms in the spring. Snow can always be fun, when it comes around. Perhaps I'd hate the warm area, but I'd at least like to try it out.
For now, I'll make like a gecko and attach myself to the walls where a heater is.
Now. My goals. I'm sad to say that I've already broken my eating out goal. The fact is that I gave myself a budget for the one meal: $15. I figured that would get me a little meal and maybe some beverage. Today, I ate out twice and exceeded that amount. Dangit.
The first instance was during DuckTv filming. We were pausing during filming, and everyone needed food. What can you say to this? No, I'll just sit in my car alone while everyone else goes into a food place? I don't know! Seriously, I don't. I could I suppose wait it out, but I'm thinking that waiting eight hours to eat isn't a good idea. I don't function well without food.
The second was because I wanted to be social. I could eat food in my house sadly alone, or I could enjoy time with others out. I chose the latter. I'm already lacking social interaction as it is, I don't want to skip out on any I have offered.
Which brings me to this issue: What things can you do to be social that don't involve money? I've been scanning my mind, and I can't think of anything. At least in the "starting out" phase of friendship. The only thing I've thought of was watching movies at an apartment, but I don't have a functioning TV. So I'm stuck.
The thing that stinks about it the most is that I was planning to save my eating out for V-Day with some APO folks. I still want to go, but... Argh, money is stressful.
My other goals have been okay though. I've been taking calcium. I'm spending less time on the computer, even if I'm not always perfect.
That's all from me. I seem to have so many questions.
Would you rather live with seasons or live somewhere with only one type of weather?
What social activities can you do that don't involve money?

Bigger Place, Less of a Safety Net
Ah man, I can't wait for it to be the weekend. I'm excited, but I don't know why. Possibly because of the half marathon, but also just because there's something about weekends that seems... exciting.
Lately, I've been thinking about small areas versus large areas. Mainly the movement from small towns to bigger areas.
For most of my life, I've been from a small area. My hometown was a town where every person knew everyone else's name. It was easy to get recognition for things you did, easy to get to know others. You're surrounded by these people all of the time, so it's quite easy to become friends. That was the same with the sports and other activities. Even if you weren't amazing at a certain activity, it was still kind of easy to get a part in things or be on the Varsity Team. (Well, except for cross country. I suck at speed.)
The point is, you were in a safe zone. You had a safety net of friends, activities, and such just because there was nothing else to do. It wasn't hard work to get these things, they just fell into your lap.
Moving to Monmouth, it was harder to get things you wanted. The dorms helped with friends (took me a little too long to realize that), but other activities were showing me that I wasn't as amazing as I thought. Have you seen other people act? They're better than you. Have you looked at other people's art? It's incredible.
Still, the dorms constantly had activities going on so it was easy to get involved.
There's the story of someone being on top of the world while in a small town. They get every role, every top position, everybody loves them. Then, they move to a big city and get lost in the fray. They become a loser. A stereotype of this that you see in movies is the jock whose glory days were in high school.
Now I'm in an even bigger town, and I don't have a built-in house of potential friends. I have to compete to get noticed. I have to work to get to know people. However, I'm not saying I'm the jock in that small town story. Like I was near jock status. Instead, moving to a bigger town is giving me a much needed kick in the pants. It's humbling, sure, but it's humbling that is needed. Honestly, because I'm gradually coming to this realization it's going to help me after school. The rejections hurt, but they help me grow. The first meetings might be awkward, but they're helping me be... less awkward.
Anyone can move to the big city. It's how you let it affect you is what matters. You can wimp out after a few tries, or you can push forward. Work harder. Be a better you than you had to be when it took less effort. It's your choice.
However, there's nothing wrong with the small town. There are a ton of people who live in small towns because they love it. On the other hand, I know that if I went back now... I'd be regretful every minute. Like the sad jock.
Hopefully I don't sound preachy, but it's just how I'm feeling as of late. Also, I wrote way too much. Eh.
What about you? Do you like the bigger cities or the smaller towns?

Life As A Duck: Halloween Weekend Celebrations
As night draws closer, it's obvious that it's time to get back to reality. I always have a nice time escaping reality for a bit though.
Funny that "Halloween" weekend is ending. Truth be told, there will probably be festivities tonight but I'm not participating. 8:00 AM class and a paper due tomorrow? Yeah, that's what I'm all about tonight.
This all brings me to another installment of Life As a Duck: Halloween Edition!
From what I've been told by the locals, there are two weekends that are the craziest here on campus. Those nights include the first week of school with all of the freshmen, and the other is Halloween.
For Halloween weekend, you don't have to venture far to find some shin-dig going on. As for the person who lives there, you're bound to have a connection somehow. For instance, my group stopped at this guy's house I needed to make an appearance at, and my sister ended up seeing someone she knew. Oh, the connections of college.
Don't worry, I didn't randomly show up to people's houses that I didn't have any connection to. That would just be weird.
Halloween here? A complete 180 from anything at WOU. Even if I did know people living in houses over there (Well, more than 1), I honestly don't think it could have been anything close to down here. Especially since, y'know people are actually walking around at night over here. Last year, I went down to OSU for festivities. Which is exactly what everyone else does, or to U of O.
Things I've learned and or seen from my last two nights include...

Things I've learned and or seen from my last two nights include...
- A lot of people don't like to costume repeat. I was totally a costume repeated, but I'm fine with that. I like my Jolly Rancher dress. Twas a good conversation piece.
- How to Cat Daddy. Yeah.
- You will find many very lazy people at these parties. Meaning not even trying to put a costume together. Mostly guys are guilty of this, just because at least most girls try and wear nice dresses when they have nothing together. A guy from my WR class was wearing what I'm pretty sure he wore to class earlier that day. C'mon boys! Make it fun! Out of this group is the pretentious guy who comments, "Oh, I didn't think it was Halloween tonight. Am I wrong?" Of course it's not, but the only reason you're not dressed up is because you're lazy. No one likes that person.
- Two Asian exchange students took a picture with me because they liked my costume. Well okay.
- A drunk out of his gourd twelve-year-old who was about 3 miles away from his house with no money. At least he looked twelve. It was a little troubling. He talked like this: "Yeah, my bros left me, and I was just trying to find some sn*tch, you know what I'm sayin'?" I wish I was kidding.
- A guy who looks a lot like Justin Long, who I will call Marty from now on even though that's not his name. What can I say, if you introduce yourself with that name the first time, and I've been meeting a lot of people with your real name anyway, I'm going to call you Marty.
- I love seeing people from random things I know at places I wouldn't expect. Pretty much the way I started every conversation was what a person's costume was, so that led me to a guy dressed as Ron Swanson. Little did I realize it was a guy I'd talked to at APO! Like I said, random connections.
- I'm such a sucker for play on word costumes. I know they usually don't take that much effort, but I still love 'em. French toast was clever, and Quarter Pounder with Cheese? Nice. (He had quarters taped to his pocket and used a hammer to "pound" them.) Probably why I liked my sister's Friday costume so much. She was dressed all nicely and had a sign around her neck saying "I'm Sorry". She was a formal apology. I love it! Yes, you can judge.
- In the ways of the introvert, this weekend filled my quota of festivities for awhile. I love people, and I love going out to things, but it takes a chunk outta ya, especially me. Time to rest, recharge, and get pumped for a bit of chilling out. ...Except for worrying about that Economics midterm on Tuesday. Oh geez.
I know there's probably more, but I've already talked enough. Besides, I need to get some sleep. As for the actual night's festivities? I'm going to hand out candy at my aunt's house, and I'm actually really excited. I kind of love handing out candy, and you get to see all of the adorable costumes kids wear. Kids don't dress slutty, college kids do. That means more creativity, and I'm all about the creative costumes.
As a last thought, I know that I didn't post last night. I didn't forget either. However, when I got home I sat down, looked at the blank post screen and thought, "Yeah, this isn't going to happen." It was probably for the best, as I took to the call of the pillow as soon as the computer was shut.
Is it really time for the school week to start? Well... okay.
What exciting things did you do for this "Halloween" weekend?

Reasons for Health and Lack of Interaction
When we work towards being healthy or fit, we usually have to ask ourselves what we're doing it for. Are we trying to look good for an event we've been invited to, or maybe for a career? There are many reasons why people want to stay fit.
My reason? I feel better. When I'm in not so great of shape, I usually don't feel very good. I guess this is an obvious thing, but sometimes you realize that you never knew how good you felt until you weren't at that same level. It's like being sick. You don't realize how sweet it is to be healthy until you start the sniffling and coughing.
Why do I like to run? Because my body has shown me that I can.
Although eating a bunch of cookies tonight? Probably not on the right track to feeling fit. Still, they were delicious.
Nothing much to say for the day, simply 'cause it was a mostly do nothing day. Did some homework, lounged about... Although I almost went crazy from the lack of human interaction. There was no one around! And if they were around, they weren't looking to chat.
Also, thanks for all of the advice from yesterday! I guess I shouldn't let it worry me as long as I'm actually working hard, but I just do. Hearing rational thoughts from others helps.

Timing, Itunes, Advice from Music and Social Life
For me, getting out of class for the day is like sliding into a hot tub. It's that "aaaah..." feeling that comes over me, because I know that my weekend is basically here. Well, except for class on Friday, but it's a lot less pressure than the rest of the week.
One thing I've come to realize this week? I need to start doing more work during the weekend. Lately work has felt like it piles up onto Wednesday, even though I work through the whole week. The problem? I don't work as much as I should on weekends. It could be because I'm doing things, but I think there's a decent chunk of time I could give to studying in the weekend.
I received some itunes money for gifts, and I've been perusing itunes quite a bit lately. I may have money for itunes, but one thing that I love about itunes is its free single of the week. I suggest taking full advantage of it! The free single of the week a lot of the time are some of the worst songs you have ever heard, but I have been able to find some gems in there. My favorite that I've gotten is a song called Marathon by Tennis. I know I've mentioned it before, but I just love it! I don't know why.
Speaking of music, while listening to What to Do by Ok Go today, I noticed some peculiar lyrics that perked my interest. It says, "Mediocre people do exceptional things all the time". This might sound kind of negative, but I actually think that this could be some good advice. Those words make me think of people who might not be blessed with the most amazing talents, but work their butts off to achieve their goals. You see? Kind of good advice.
Something with my social mojo is most definitely off. I think the extreme social awkwardness of some of the people I hang out with is rubbing off on me. I was working so hard to act normal socially, but I think my subconscious has given up on me with this idea.
With that idea, I've discovered something a little bit depressing about myself. Usually, I tend to draw in friends who are on completely different sides of the spectrum. Some of my friends have been those who enjoy partying, getting stoned, and chilling through life. The other friends have been people who are timid, awkward, and don't have many wishes to go out to party very often. What I want are those who are willing to go out and have some fun, yet still have days where chilling out is fine too. That brings me to my confession: I'm jealous of my the friends my sister has. It's a little embarrassing to admit, but her friends are the perfect happy medium. Do I simply lack that potential to make said friends, or are they just not around? I don't know.
Hopefully I didn't scare you off! The weekend is here (sort of)! Huzzah!

The Big Goal Finally Acheived
What a day, what a day.
Today I accomplished a goal. I did something that I decided to do at the beginning of the school year, and knew I was going to do when 2011 started. Today, I ran my half-marathon. And it was AWESOME.
There are a million little things I could say that happened during my race, and a lot of it would seem meaningless to others but for mean were a million amazing moments. Like when I tried to take a swig of Gatorade but instead splashed the whole thing in my face on accident.
There were a few people who helped me finish this race today, and I'd like to thank them:
As for the race itself, it was... rough. It was rough because the whole race was pouring down rain and terrible wind. 12 mph wind? Yeah. (Actually, I'm not sure how bad that really is, but it felt intense.) Strangely enough, I felt fantastic the whole time. Maybe it was adrenaline, but I just felt... good. Sure, there was a side ache for about half a mile, and my legs were starting to feel like bricks for the last two miles. However, I get sickly feeling a lot usually for longer. That didn't happen.
I had two main goals: Don't stop to walk whatsoever and get under the two and a half hour time (That was when they would start taking the guiding things down). I could have thought about things such as, "People have run way father distances than this! I'm getting all hyped about this little thing, and some people have done much more amazing things." I've had these thoughts pass through my mind before, when reading blogs and such. That is not what I thought today though. The thoughts passing through my mind were:
"You are going at such a great pace. Don't slow down because you feel like you might loose your energy, because you've done that before and ended up with energy to spare. Slowing down will make you tired. Keep going."
And
"Do NOT stop to walk. You know that if you walk, deep down you'll always feel like a quitter because you knew that you didn't actually need to stop. You are not a damn quitter. Don't give anyone the reason to say you are. Keep going."
Yeah, I can be a bit of a jerk to myself. It works though. (I might sound a bit nutty as well in my mind... I do have songs from various Disney movies play through my head when I run long distances.)
My race overall? Fantastic. At the end I was even able to pass two girls right before the finish line! My inner high school cross country runner was exuberant. My time was 1:58:11. You read that right. I finished under two hours. I don't know about you, but that felt pretty amazing. I told my family, "I should be done about two hours ten minutes, so be around the finish line at two hours." I gave myself ten minute miles, just to give myself the benefit of the doubt. My time right there averaged me 9:01 minute miles. I finished 244th out of 524 runners.
After my race, I ended up eating enough the rest of the day to fuel a marathon runner and watched the Golden Globes. A "fun fact" I've realized over time? If something you talk about is not related to the person you are speaking to, they will not remember said information. People are conceited. Well, maybe all of the people in my generation that I meet. I specifically said to one of my hall mates, "Okay, I just want to make sure there's time in between my race and the Globes. I don't know how long it will take to get back from my race." She said I had never mentioned my race to her, taken aback by my accusation of her forgetting. I even mentioned to my whole hall, "Hey, on Sunday I have my half marathon in Turner at 9:00 am. If anyone is interested in coming, I just thought I'd let you know. It can just be draining. Sure, I can be super forgetful, and I admit that. But I also try to remember details, and I admit that I've probably asked things before.
Goodness, I have written a lot! I simply decided to pour myself all out I suppose. Now, I am exhausted. Love to you all!

Today I accomplished a goal. I did something that I decided to do at the beginning of the school year, and knew I was going to do when 2011 started. Today, I ran my half-marathon. And it was AWESOME.
| My shirt and medal! |
There were a few people who helped me finish this race today, and I'd like to thank them:
- The old guy in the orange and grey jacket, who I ran with/near from mile 3 to mile 8. You gave me a good target to keep with, wearing that neon orange and all.
- Guy who was listening to Keep on Dancing by Gwen Stefani and some metal music. Thank you for unwittingly letting me play the "Guess what that person is listening to" game and running a similar pace to me for awhile. It was also cool to run with someone who was running their first half marathon too. But man? Running 11 miles on Sunday and not running for the rest of the week before the race does not sound like a good plan. Maybe that's why I broke away from you at around mile 11.
| There would be more pictures. However, there was a wardrobe malfunction I was unaware of until after the photos were taken. This is one of the few you can't tell very well. |

Running Late, Feeling Off About School and Other Things
Ugh. Today has been one off-kilter day for sure. Just one thing can do that to you, can't it?
I have had 8:00 am classes almost every day since the beginning of the school year. Today, I woke up for the first time late. Yeah. I managed to get to class only a minute or two late, but it still was late. And of course it was one of those classes where participation counts as attendance. Of course. Just did not put my head in a good place for the rest of the day, you know?
I'm not sure how I've been feeling about my school lately. Yes, I do happen to mention that quite a bit, but my distaste for this school is growing and growing. The thing is, it's not the classes that are bothering me. The area is beginning to bore me. I don't connect with people here. There's no excitement! I suppose that could be said for everywhere, and everywhere is going to become boring after awhile. But this town literally is boring. As for the people, I feel like I don't have things in common with anyone here. Others go to bible studies, it's not what I'm interested in. The only other issue with this school happens to be my major, which I don't think any of the field here are really what I'm interested in. Plus, that's a bit bigger than social life.
On a strange positive note, lately I've been feeling really pretty. Despite feeling the lack of people wishing to be social, I've been feeling like I look pretty. Even in blah clothing. This is kind of big for me, because I feel like my face looks weird a lot. Yes, my mom says I'm pretty, but sometimes it doesn't do it for ya. But yeah. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure I'm not at my skinniest I've been, but I feel prettier. That's kind of a nice feeling.
I think my room mate just likes to push my buttons. She posted a clipping from the front of The Oregonian with a picture with the heading Aw, Burned. She does realize I like the ducks, right? Yes, I know she's probably a beaver, but c'mon. It's your state. Then again, she's also got a giant poster of this hanging on the wall:
This is a recent thing that has been put on the wall. Yet, I still dislike the newspaper clipping more. Huh.
I apologize for the seriously long and negitive post! I try to stay positive, but today I just wasn't in that mode. I'll try to be happier tomorrow! Like I said, a long off-kilter day.

Battle in Seattle Recap
Hello everyone! The end of Sunday draws near, something I am not ready for. I need a rest day, and today was not it.
Yesterday was Battle in Seattle. We all got up to pile into buses at 9:30, and by 10 we were off. My room mate ended up not going. She didn't even stay the night in our room the night before. Any who, in the bus there were two seats in each space. I grabbed one near the front near some people from my hall, but the coordinators were like, "Oh, we need the front spaces, can you sit somewhere else?" I ended up sitting with some people from Landers I had met before a few rows back. Keep in mind the few rows back thing.
I talked to the Landers girls. I tried being social, but somehow it didn't seem like they were feeling it. Sorry that I'm trying to be friendly, I didn't know it was that awkward getting to know people you don't live with. Another thing I did was get excited to say "First one in Washington!" Apparently no one on the bus has ever done that in their lives. Lame. Though no one was too excitable, at least we watched good movies on the way up.
Then this happened. Finally, we get to a rest stop. I go over to my two dorm mates that I hang out with usually with my room mate. One of them says this, "OH my gawd, we could hear you the whole time. It would be quiet, then we'd hear you and be like, 'Oh my god Hannah shut UP!" Maybe they were trying to be funny. I didn't even think I talked that much. But it hurt. One of my biggest fears is that I'm annoying people, so it means they don't want to hang out with the annoying weirdo. Is it better that I remain in the background and fade away so that no one really notices that I'm there? Or is it better that I'm actually trying to get to know people, be social? This shut me up for pretty much the whole ride. I was texting my cousin Ali and mentioned it, when suddenly my sister calls. Odd. I answer and hear,
"Who does this effing b*tch think she is? Who the hell says that?!" It turns out that my sister was with my cousin and was reading the texts. I couldn't really talk to her about it on the bus, because *someone* would hear me from my over-ly carrying voice. That's something I really love about my family. They're extremely supportive.
Finally after arriving in Seattle, I dashed over to two of my other hall mates to hang out with them We ended up walking around and eating dinner in Seattle. It was great! I didn't feel as worried or judged, and we had a great time!
The game was... okay, the game was awful. We played HORRIBLY. Let's just say our team sucks and does not understand how to play the game intelligently. It was also freezing. I did get a free t-shirt though! Plus hanging with the hall mates (the non-bashing ones) was fun. They had never been to a college football game, and one of them had never been to a football game period! Wild.
When coming back, I noticed that the girl I sat next to before was napping and put her bag in my seat. Subtle. Once again, I was tossed into a random seat. The ride back was not so great because:
I was going to write more about today, but I've already written a lot. I'll just mention a last thing that today was weigh in day! The scale says... 131 lbs. I can tell. I can feel it, I can see it. What did I do differently?
What do you do when someone bad mouths you?

When coming back, I noticed that the girl I sat next to before was napping and put her bag in my seat. Subtle. Once again, I was tossed into a random seat. The ride back was not so great because:
- I was exhausted and couldn't get in a comfortable position to sleep
- I hadn't eaten much, and my body could tell even if I didn't feel too hungry
- As I said before, I have a cold and it's getting to me. I was seriously feeling it by this time.
I was going to write more about today, but I've already written a lot. I'll just mention a last thing that today was weigh in day! The scale says... 131 lbs. I can tell. I can feel it, I can see it. What did I do differently?
- Last week I didn't run as far, but I ran little incriments every day. This week was longer mileage, with days inbetween. I don't want to overwork myself, so I'm continuing the running the same way.
- I ate top ramen twice this week. Once is enough for any week. I had it as a meal each time, but even then it doesn't do anything for you.
- Finally... I've been eating too much granola. I need to start eating something else for breakfast. The problem with it is that I will munch and munch and munch on it. Not good. I need to find a breakfast with protein and carbs to give me energy and fuel for the day other than that!
