Let's Have a Bit of Warning, Shall We?

Today has certainly been an... interesting day. Not one of the greatest, but I'd rather not complain. Here are just a few things of my day.
The theme of the day seemed to revolve around my need to know things ahead of time. In some situations, that was a good thing. In others... Not so much.

Like for the fact that one of my roommates is moving out for a month. Apparently he's going to pay rent, but... c'mon. We all live in this apartment together. You have to tell me these things! I'd say something if I was moving out for a month! I try with the communication, but that is just too much to not mention. I even asked the other day, "Oh, are you packing up for a trip?", and Hao just said no. Nothing about moving out. It just pisses me off. I'm going to confront them tomorrow about it, but I just didn't have time to talk today. (I was off to class as I found this out, so I didn't have much time to react.)

Okay, NOW I don't want to complain. I'm sorry! It was just something stressful that needed to be removed from my chest. Yes, I worded that as awkwardly as possible.

With liking to be as ahead of schedule as possible, I made sure to make an appointment with the study abroad advisers to ask questions. I've been worried about how my financial aid is going to work, and why I haven't gotten information.
Turns out, I'm WAY ahead of the game. The school doesn't even have all of their financial information figured out. The advisor I talked to today even told me that I was way ahead of the game.
I like it like that. Really, I'd rather know I'm ahead than last minute finding out about something I missed.

In other news, I've already got new goals for next month coming into play. Oh yes. I try to get a bit of a head start on them, but they become official at the beginning of the month. Like dipping your toes into the lake before cannon-balling in. Is today only the 24th? I've been thinking it's the 25th all day. I think I'm ready for March to be here.
Shameful fact: I get excited for the end of the month to come sometimes just so I can reach the end without spending more money for that month. Like if I need to grocery shop, I think, "Just a few more days... I've already spent X amount on groceries this month." Flawed logic? Completely. Let me have this though.

Welp, I'm going to bed and going to try to sleep in as long as possible before going on a run. I have no idea how far to run tomorrow, just because I'm not training for anything. What does my long run become? Perhaps I'll ask my sister to run with me.

Do you need a lot of warning, or are you more of a "on the whim" type person?

Advising Advice

We're already at Thursday for the week, aren't we? Wow, winter term is flying by.

I had two different things to talk about today, but I ended up writing a lot more than expected about one of them. We'll talk about the other one tomorrow.

From my time that I've spent in college I've learned that no matter what, you will get screwed with advising. At the same time though, it's a really good idea to go to advising.

Once upon a time, I was a transfer student coming to a school that had all sorts of different requirements. I knew that I would like to do Journalism as my major, so I planned out my first term with all of the prereqs needed before applying to the J school. When I went to an advisor during orientation however, she exclaimed, "No, don't do all of those J classes in one term! Spread them out to two terms. You need 35 credits from the UO before you apply anyways."

So I listened to her. I was skeptical, but she knew more than I did. Before I started my first term, I went to a J school advisor as well. She said it wasn't necessary, but a decent plan for my first term.
Later, I wanted to study abroad. I had the term all figured out, and was ready to get into the Gateway program as soon as possible. I discussed with an advisor again at the end of the fall term.
"NO." she snapped. This was in reply to starting the Gateway program spring term. It wasn't offered then, but I didn't know. At least I knew now, before I tried applying for the class then.

Coming back to today, I talked to an advisor again. I decided to get on the ball before everyone else was rushing in during the end of the term. The lady I talked to today was a lot nicer than the jerk during fall term. I found that I was screwed over with the spreading out of the pre-reqs (as I kind of knew), but I also found out I could take certain classes earlier that I didn't know I could before. Classes that will help make graduating on time a lot more realistic. (If I get into them. We'll work on that.)

Sure, I've been screwed by the advisers. I tried as hard as I could to not be, but I think it's something you can't escape. On the other hand, I've also learned many useful things from going to advising. Overall, for any kid in college or about to go to college, I say go to advising. It may help you graduate on time. Try to get a few opinions though.

Like I said, didn't realize how much I'd talk about that. It's an interesting thing to think about though. I know plenty of people who have been screwed by advising. The only ones I know who haven't have their entire college careers planned out as soon as they move into their first dorm.

Now it's time for me to make like a bee and buzz off. Oh, I'm so witty.

Did you ever have problems with advising? Or did advising help you a lot in school?

Flippin' Schedules

It's that special time of year again!

Source
No, not this time of year.
It's time to register for classes. Oh yes.

One of the things that I despise am getting used to while attending the U of O is the whole system of class scheduling, and advising appointments. At WOU, it was very easy to have everything figured out for your classes. They would post signs in the walkways, indicating that signing up for classes was coming very soon. They would send you an email to remind you. You only had one advisor, and that advisor helped you with all of your class scheduling questions. That? That does not happen here.

Trying to be the responsible student, I made sure to set up an advising appointment, with the person said to be my advisor. Being on the ball, I thought to myself. However apparently, your advisor does not help with your schedule. Your advisor helps with internships and such. That meant having a drop in appointment but thankfully, they were able to see me today.
With all of this stuff you have to do yourself, it's amazing to me just because my room mate last year couldn't even figure out all of the advising stuff despite the large amounts of help she received.

Have you ever had something organized just the way you like, just to realize that one thing has to change, changing your whole set up in the process? I have, and when you're unstable due to not enough sleep the night before, it's not a good thing. Especially if it makes sometime you really want to do in the future seem even more difficult than it was before. I may have gotten testy with the advisor after learning about certain classes being offered at certain dates, and how it would affect my plans. Then again, she was kind of rude. She cut me off a lot, which personally I don't think is very nice even if you think you know what the other person is going to say.

Apparently the advising situation isn't great for a lot of people, as I've been informed. I suppose that's just what you have to deal with in a big university.

I register for classes on Friday, so I decided to organize my (hopeful) schedule for the next term. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with organizing my class schedule because I love to organize my time, but sometimes things don't fit the way I want them to. Eh, what can you do.

On an unrelated note, this month is NaNoWriMo! The other name for it is National Novel Writing Month, and I always forget it. The whole idea is that you are to write a novel that is 50,000 words by the end of the month. I always think that it would be cool to participate in, but by the time the month begins I realize that I don't have any ideas for things to write about. Then again, I'm not sure if I've ever had an idea for a novel. Comics sure, but a novel? Not really. Still, it's a very cool idea.

When did I start enjoying November so much? I've actually been really liking this month. Plus, it's already half over (almost) meaning that Thanksgiving is very soon! Hoorah!

I can't believe how late it is already. Goodness. It's bedtime for me.

Do you like planning your schedule ahead of time, or a you a more "go with the flow" type? Me: Very big on planning ahead. My high school friends: Extremely go with the flow. Opposites attract?

Spring, Advising, Loosing Things and The Royal Wedding

I'm trying to decide how I feel about Spring right now. I thought that it was one of my favorite seasons until I actually thought about what the weather is like in the spring. Truthfully? Not very nice. I think I like Summer the best, then Fall.

Having an advising appointment is awkward when you have to say you're transferring somewhere else. Just... Really awkward.

I know that's it's an old expression, but my room mate would lose her own head if it wasn't attached. My reasoning for this is quite valid. You see, weekly, maybe even daily there is something that she looses within the depths of her mountains of clothes. For the last week, something even bigger than usual went missing: her wallet. Now, that's a pretty serious thing to lose. So she's been searching everywhere for it: her clothes piles, her friends' rooms, anywhere she's been. Luckily, she found it today. IN HER BACKPACK. I know that I can be forgetful, but that's just ridiculous.

With the strangely large masses of Americans, I too am getting a little excited for the royal wedding. I think the reason that it's so exciting for the rest of us is because it's like the fairy tale dream we all hope for. There's one disadvantage to wanting to watch the wedding though. So, you know how you East Coasters will see the wedding ceremony start at 6? It starts at 3 over here. In the morning.
I plan on waking up with some of the people in my hall, then going straight to bed as soon as the ceremony is over. Sorry, but that's ridiculous.

Are you excited for the royal wedding? Are you waking up for it?

Advisors, Room mates, and Things I Have Learned from Fictional Characters

Now that all of that Superbowl fun is done, let's get on with the week, shall we?

Who watched the Superbowl out there, anyway? I asked around my hall and no one was watching it! How disappointing. Perhaps it's just because I enjoy football and the commercials. Seriously, even if you don't like football, you watch it for the commercials, right? Here's my favorite:

...That sounds a bit odd, watching television to see advertisements. Anywho.
Of course, I was a fool and forgot my camera, so no pictures of the festivities. I really ought to get better at that. Stories are more fun to read with pictures, aren't they?

I had a meeting with my advisor today to discuss majors, next term, and career paths. Also known as the advising hold appointment. I met with my "official" advisor, who was a nice guy. At first, I felt like he was just another one of the advisors who tell you just the basic details, but he was really able to go in-depth with me. He was... dare I say it? Helpful! That's not always the case.
The odd thing about making advising appointments and such is that I feel a lot more on top of things than other students. I've asked if other people had made their appointments, and some of them didn't even know it was time to do that yet. When showing my advisor all of the things I'd been thinking about, he even mentioned how ahead I was in studying up information on these things than other students. It just seems... odd. Aren't I supposed to be lax like other people my age? More power to me I guess.

When looking up classes to add next term, I decided I was just going to look at classes that sounded intriguing. One that caught my eye? C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling. OH MAN YES. Despite being a higher level, I talked to someone who knew the teacher, and that the only thing you need to do is read all of the books beforehand. Um, spring break by the pool? Entirely doable.

Speaking of books, Julie and Julia came into the library for me today. I know that it's very 2009, but I want to read it! Reading about cooking and food make me want to learn how to cook.

Before I forget, it's once again Monday and I'd like to include a Things I Have Learned From Fictional Characters. I'll make it short, since this post is already pretty long. Today's lesson comes from Goofy:

Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. We all make mistakes, we all have times were we look... goofy. Do we freak out about it? No! I know that I've gotten pretty bad about things that aren't that large, and I've gotten better at not being so tense about it.

Okay, I lied. I do have one last thing to say. As you know, I've had some tension with my room mate. The thing is, one of the main reasons has been because we just hadn't been feeling like friends anymore. However, the last two days she seems like my good ol' pal again. It's nice. I mean, she even bought me a doughnut when she went to Portland!

Old Dirty Bastard. One of the most delicious doughnuts ever.
How freaking nice is that? But it's not even the doughnut. It's nice to have my friend back.

And so I say adieu to you! Hope your evening is grand!

Was your advisor helpful in school? Or did you have to be more self-relient?
